Happy November! It’s a new month and time to explore possibilities. I thought it would be fun to see what is possible with flying geese quilt borders. This classic quilt block is loaded with potential when it comes to quilt blocks.
If you’re making a flying geese quilt border you will need a lot of flying geese. Try this method to make them quickly. Be sure to pick up my cheat sheet. Enabling you to make them in a variety of sizes without having to do the math.
For instance they can simply fly around your quilt in a single row. I did this in two different ways with this masculine version of Sunshine on A Cloudy Day. On the top and bottom I let them create arrows flying out from the center. Where on the sides I put them side by side as points.
Another way you can use them as just part of a border. Dream has this kind of border up the right side.
Flying geese can also be put together in sets of two to make a chevron border. Or made into the Dutchmen’s Puzzle block to give a spinning affect. I used this style border in my family reunion quilt to honor our Dutch heritage.
An other example of a flying geese border is to stagger them. Like this quilt by Linda.
I hope this inspires you to use flying geese in your quilt borders. Want to learn more pieced borders? Join me in Aunt Em’s Sew Along Adventure. From the end of November through December I’ll be share borders to expand your quilts.
