Giving Quilts as Gifts

Weather you gift quilts for new babies, birthdays, graduations, or weddings. They bring comfort to the sick or down trodden.  A quilt is a pretty awesome gift. Even though I make quilts I have been gift a few in my day. I must say I loved every one! I don’t think you can ever have too many quilts.  When I give a quilt as a gift I expect it to be used.  I don’t want it put away in a closet never to see the light of day.  It is not so special that it needs to be saved for a special day.

I want my quilts used.  They need to go on picnics and to football games. Needed before bedtime as blankies and snugly, cuddly things. I want them used to swaddle babies, to become walls in tents and forts of young children. Teenagers should huddle under them at campfires and movies. Become a place where newlyweds make love, and toddlers crawl between sleepy parents. I want them to become thread bare and patched, full of memories, comfort, and love.

I may never be a show quilt maker.  But I can be a wonderful quilt giver.  And if you receive a quilt from me know I made it specially for you.  Don’t wait for a special occasion to use it.  You are the special occasion.  Celebrate it!

I totally agree! Quilts are made to be used and enjoyed! I always love the quote: ‘Sometimes Your Heart speaks best through your Hands’! – so those handmade gifts are meant to be taken out and enjoyed :)!

Perfectly said … my quilts too are meant to be used, snuggled, comforted by. It ALMOST hurts my feelings if the receiver stores it away. Please use it and enjoy the love it is bringing!

Emily, loved these words! That is exactly how I feel about gifting my quilts, you put it so well! Twice I have gifted baby quilts to be later told they thought they were too good to be used, and put them on the wall instead. It is flattering, but not the point of a quilt. If you don’t mind, I would like to use some of your words when I next make a quilt for someone, I love that sentiment, you are the special occasion! Love your blog, and enjoy your emails. Love, Loraine.x
