I joined my first about 20 years ago. Has it really been that long? I was a newby. At the time the only quilt I had made was a very simple log cabin. My mom had me make it for what my dad called my hopeless chest. You can see a picture of it here. I had recently taken a quilting class that was kind of like a block of the month through my church. Each month we learned a different method and a few blocks that used that method. I moved before I finished the class. Fortunately Gayle, from the Middle Sister, was one of my new neighbors. She graciously invited me to my first guild meeting.
The group was so kind and willing to help me improve my quilting skills that I’ve been going ever since. I love all that a guild offers. There are challenges. One year the challenge was, I Heard It on Vinyl. The above quilt was my entry based on The Garden Song sung by Peter, Paul and Mary. Lorri’s quilt won. She chose the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
There are often sew a longs and classes. This is LaRae’s Scrappy Bear Paw quilt I recently taught at guild.
Our guild does an ornament exchange every year. I so love this little gingerbread man ornament I once received.
We also do fabric exchanges. They are a great way to collect a wide range of fabrics. This one was a dotty exchange but we have also done, batiks, eye spy and 30’s.
But the best part of being in a guild is the friends you make. Never a dull moment with this group.
Do you belong to a guild? Do you belong to more than one? Would you like to join one? You’d be welcome at mine. We’d love to have you! If your not in the area I also belong to an online guild. They do many of the same things my local quilt guild does. We’d love to have you there also!
So much hope and good cheer is in your message and the people look real and happy just to be there together!
The garden quilt picture taken in a snow scene gives a person hope that spring will come!
The guilds are always fun and have so many events and projects. Love the photo of the quilt in the snow.
How lovely! Thanks for the invitation to visit your guild! And for the online guild tip, I 'll check into that. We're in transition, not living at home, for a while longer and I do miss being plugged in.
Thanks again.
Cool! An online guild! I like that idea. I live in a rural area and my DH has activities on the evenings the guild in town meets, so it's not on option for me. I would love to hear more about how you participate in the online community.
Guilds are great. I belong to the Raincross Quilt Guild in Riverside, and don't miss a minute – it's so much fun.
My "hopeless chest" was filled with towels and cutlery. My first quilt guild met around the corner from our house. I joined and haven't looked back!! I belong to several quilt groups. Wouldn't trade them for the world!!!
I love quilt guild, in fact, I belong to 2!!
