I’ve been wanting to make a new quilt for my son, Josh’s bed. I decided on a block and picked out fabrics. I sent off 11 packages to the ladies in my Twice as Nice Bee. Well their lovely blocks have started arriving at my house. So I thought I should get busy and make a few of my own.
I’m really liking how they are coming together. I’m a little concerned about the block with the pink piece in it. It really is a nice block. Pieced perfectly. And it is probably somewhat my fault the pink piece ended up in the quilt. I did not make it clear that this quilt was for my son. I sent some Kaffe and Amy Butler that had bits of pink in them with the fabric packs I sent out. And told the ladies that they could add some of their own fabric to add variety to the blocks. I guess I could add more pink so it was a lone rider in the quilt. But I’m not sure how Josh would feel about that.
What are your thoughts on the subject?
Hmm, it depends on how old your son is? I'd probably say no, I have a 15 year old, who I'm trying to make a quilt for now. I didn't realize it would be this hard. Girls are much easier to find fabric for.
My son would certainly balk at pink. Is there a way to applique something over it? Really terrific blocks.
Well you could leave that one piece in, and tell him it's a reminder that mum made it for him…but he probably wouldn't buy it. Rather than take it apart, I'd try applique.
I'd say no to the pink for a boy.
I would keep the block, take the pink out and replace with another piece. That way you are able to use the block with a slight correction!
I agree with Lorri. Take it apart and replace. I've participated in several swaps and that is what I do if something isn't quite right. I believe the person put their best effort into the block and it deserves to be seen but…once I get it, it becomes "mine" so unstitch and resew? Sure! Take out a glaring fabric? Sure! Use the block? Sure! Toni
Love the colors in this one, it's going to be such a pretty quilt. Did you cover up the pink?
I personally like the random pink. Surely he won't notice it in the big scheme of things?!
Great pattern! Love the grey with the green. I know my son would be okay with the one pink (mostly because he's color blind ;)) but I think I would probably pick apart the block and replace the pink. I don't think you would hurt anyone's feelings and it would make you feel better too.
I LOVE the random pink… in fact when looking at the picture I didn't notice it until I read that it was in there… that said, I would replace it. It depends on your son, but if it would bug him, I would pick it out and put another fabric in.
I would probably take a dye pen and doodle over the pink patch. Blue on top of pink would make a purple so that might work. Doodle things like squares and rectangles because they seem a bit more masculine than circles and spirals.
My first thought was also to doodle over the pink block with some of the other colors in the quilt – the blues and greens. That would minimize the pink probably enough to make it less objectionable – and it's certainly easier than taking the block apart!
I would vote for redoing the block with the pink in it. I love the colors and the pattern….very nice!
The blocks are lovely…I think my boys would have said, Oh Mum, pink, but, because I made it they would have still loved it…
My brother is 13 and he wouldn't think one bit of pink would be a big deal. He's not a huge fan of the color, but just that little bit should be fine. If you really don't like it, but don't want to have to ditch the block, you could make a little tag with his name on it to applique over that little spot.
I would take the pink out. Not because the quilt is for a 15-year old boy, but becaue it looks out of place.
ex-nay on the pink…
Can you embroider something to him on the pink like "made by Mom" or "Love, Mom" on it?
Oh, I like Jessica's idea. Maybe the block could go in the lower corner and you could write the quilt info on it. Pink = mom. What does he think? Or is it a surprise?
