This is my little creation for Lyn’schallenge. It is not one bit like what I first invisioned when I saw these sweet grandmother’s garden blocks on her blog. I was thinking flowers blooming from a pot. But I could not stay within the peramiters of the challenge and do that. So these little blocks sat on the design wall for quite a while. Then while trying to figure out blocks for Jane’s woven quilt this idea came to me.
I call it Grandpa’s wrench in Grandma’s garden. Now there is a story with this. A few years ago at Thanksgiving time my dad (aka grandpa) thought it would be fun to go jeepin’ before Thanksgiving dinner. My mom (aka grandma) told him no, that something was bound to happen and Thanksgiving dinner would be ruined. Grandpa assured her that he would be careful, that nothing was going to happen and left for a ‘short’ jeep ride. On Grandpa’s short jeep ride he rolled his jeep. Now he wasn’t hurt fortunately but was not back when Grandma’s Thanksgiving dinner was ready. This threw quite a wrench in Grandma’s Thanksgiving dinner that was getting cold. And she was none to happy.
Now I know that Grandpa’s are not the only ones that throw wrenches in the works of life. But I had Grandmother’s garden blocks so this seemed approprate. Now for the help I requested. Should I put flowers in the baskets? I’m thinking maybe little yo yos or buttons. And what kind of border do you suggest? I welcome and appreciate any and all suggestions.
buttons would look cute…but I also like yoyo I think something "leafy" would make a cute border.
Little yo yo would be pretty, I would lay different trin out by the top and what jump out is what I would use.
I don't think the basket need anything added. Seems to be enough going in inside the quilt. I was thinking a zig zag border might work that would mimic the rick rack handles. A stop border first and then the zig zag.
Enjoy the process whatever you settle on.
I think yoyos would be nice in the baskets as long as they are small ones. I can never visualize the border until I start auditioning fabrics. Maybe you could match one of the baskets…

I think I would pout a vine border with little yo yo and button flowers on it.

It's very cute with the ric rac handles! Could you design the border first and then decide about adding flowers? If the border is busy, I wouldn't add flowers, but if it is more simple, flowers (either yo-yo or button) would look good.
I love your yoyo idea! Maybe a thin border, and then a wide, with one of your favorite prints in the top?
Love your story and the name of the quilt. Just makes it that much cooler.
I always find it difficult to 'think' up a border idea. I have to audition fabrics to see what appeals to me. I would do some kind of narrow stop border, followed by a wider one, but you would have to try some fabrics to see what works. If the borders are too busy you may not have to put anything into the baskets. But yoyos would look great otherwise.
I think it's lovely as it is, but I am a simple sort of person!

Oh, how about a prairie point border? You could also make hexagon flowers with button centers for the baskets.
I like the story, I think a plain border – you don't want to take away too much from the rest of it. Or a yo-yo border may be cute . I think individual hexagons in the baskets with a center on each one – maybe a tiny yo-yo.
