Moving Forward and Tutorial

Are you ready to ring in the new year?  I’m planning big things for 2019.  I hope to have many scrappy tutorials to share.  I hope you will find them informative and helpful.  Even though it’s a day early I thought it would be fun to share this tutorial.

Before Christmas you might remember I was working on some scrappy log cabin blocks.  Because I was running out of longer strips I had to come up with an alternate plan.  Cute scrappy star blocks became my solution.

I thought it would be fun to share a little tutorial on each block and finally the quilt.  First start with a square and strip. Sew together.

Continue sewing strips around the square.

 Then go around again.

Continue unit you have a square that is more than 10 1/2″ square.  Square up your block to 10 1/2″ This is your log cabin block.

For the star center sew a strip onto one side of a square.

On the adjacent side sew another strip.

Continue back and forth sewing strips onto these two sides

Until you can square it up to 5 1/2″

Cut a 3″ strip of background and star point fabric (I know these are 2 1/2″ but I have a plan for them and I used up my 3″ strips.)

Using a half square or flying geese ruler cut 8 half square triangles from your star point fabric.

From background strip cut 4- 3″ squares and using a quarter square or flying geese ruler cut 4- quarter square triangles.

These are the pieces you will need for the star block

Sew a half square star triangle to one side of the quarter square background.

Press open and sew another half square star triangle to the other side of the quarter square background.

press open to create flying geese unit.  (Make 4 of these)

Layout the flying geese units with the quarter log cabin center and 2 1/2″ background squares to create star.  Sew together.

Cut 25- 10 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ sashing strips

Cut 7- 2 1/2″ x width of fabric strips

Sew these end to end and sub cut into 6- 2 1/2″ x 50 1/2″ strips

Sew the 10 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ sashing strip between blocks so you have 5 rows with 4 blocks in each row.

Sew the 50 1/2″ strips between your rows and to the top and bottom of your quilt.

The result will be a 50″ x 62″ quilt.  This is mine.  If you make one I’d love to see.

And as promised it’s time for Moving it Forward.  Now that Christmas is over we should have no secrets.(Right, wink wink)  Can’t wait to see what you’re moving forward.
