Quilted Oven Mitts

I’ve got another quick and easy scrap busting project for you today.  Are you in?  Great!  Today I’m sharing how to make quilted oven mitts.   They are cute and useful.  Not to mention a great way to use a small orphan block, scrap fabric as well as batting scraps.  You will also need a little Insul-Bright. and my template.  You can find it here.  If your a member of Aunt Em’s Sew Along Adventure it is included in your membership.  Alright let’s get started.

The first thing you will want to do is add strips to your orphan block if it is smaller than 6 1/2″.  If it is larger, no worries.  Once you make your quilt sandwich you can just fussy cut the part you want for your oven mitt.  Make a quilt sandwich with a backing fabric, two pieces of batting, a piece of Insul-Bright and your orphan block or top.  I’ll show how to do this in the video tutorial.

Use a simple quilting motif to quilt your quilt sandwich.  Repeat this process with the remaining oven mitt pieces.  Then cut out your pieces using the template.  Sew according to the video instructions.  Bind and enjoy!

Enjoy them in your own kitchen.  Or gift them to someone you love.  Give them by themselves.  Or fill a basket with baking mixes and pans for a great mother’s day, or teacher gift.

  • I love how this project makes use of orphan blocks and scraps—Blog Comment Creationsuch a clever way to breathe new life into leftover materials. The idea of pairing a mitt with baking goodies for a thoughtful gift is so charming. I’m excited to try this with a few old blocks I wasn’t sure what to do with!
