We have had a lot of babies born in our family recently. In fact I’m going to a baby shower later today for my nephew and his wife’s new baby due in December. With all these bundles of joy, I’ve had the pleasure of making many baby quilts. Each has been an opportunity to dive into my scraps and stash and create. The great thing about a baby quilt is that they come together quickly, and are a joy to give.
The first thing I consider when making a baby quilt is who it is for. With my daughter’s baby I went with simple and only a splash of color. I used the classic rail fence block in addition to one of the sailboat blocks available through my sew along membership.
My niece I used more color but kept it to a limited pallet Using the methods taught in my Strip Set Play workshop.
My nephew’s baby got a playful, scrappy quilt. It staggers the scrappy lozenge blocks found in this tutorial.
I’m still pondering the quilt I will make for my son and his wife’s new baby due in March.
In addition to considering who it is for, I think about what colors and blocks to use. I personally like to use a lot of color. I noticed recently how much my grandson loved batting at the various colorful blocks in this quilt. While a momma may not want to stimulate her baby at nap time. When it’s tummy time a colorful scrap quilt is perfect for developing baby minds. Having a unifying background lets all those colors pop A unified background doesn’t necessarily have to be one fabric.
