Free Motion Quilting is something I started doing more because I’m cheap than because I wanted to gain the skill. Quilting by check was just not something I could bring myself to do. I know my skills in this area are not the best. But as I improve I do like it more. The fact that other than Ruth I don’t have a lot of help getting the tops quilted for the Quilty Hugs we make each month in our sew in. Fortunately Ruth is really good at FMQ. She recently let me know about a YouTube station I have found very useful. After watching one of their tutorials I did this all over design.
I really liked it. Here is the tutorial. I did change mine a little. I make leaves differently than she shows. I didn’t feel the need to change it.
While finishing up the last of the basted Quilty Hugs yesterday I found this border. My curves are not as smooth as they should be but I’m pretty pleased with the results.
Here is the tutorial I watched for this one.
If you are interested in improving your FMQ I recommend Whirls and Swirls. She has lots of videos and her instructions really worked for me. I know I’ll be watching and using more of her videos.
Happy New Year, Em! Whirls and Swirls looks like a great place for inspiration and ideas. Piecing is more of my favorite part of quilt making but I like that I can do the quilting myself rather than give it to someone else to do…even though my skills and interest in that part aren't as high.
Thanks for the links, Em. Your quilting looks good. I'm always in a quandary as to WHAT to quilt where!
I don't like to quilt by check either. The whole point of quilting for me is to enjoy the entire process, not pay someone else to do it. Your quilting looks great. Thanks for the tutorials.
Quilting by check? means you pay someone else to do it? If so, I am with you on that one.
I FMQ about 1 in 3 of the quilts I make even though I get exasperated with it, such a slow process.
Yes that is correct.
Do you use your domestic sewing machine for your fmq? It looks beautiful!
Thanks for sharing the links. I like watching FMQ videos and then practicing. I think your quilting looks great!
