Use Up Your Tiniest Scraps with The Butterfly Quilt Block

I’ve discovered a new love. Playing with crumb fabric with my AccuQuilt Go. My latest session of play was with the butterfly quilt block. After all what’s more colorful than a butterfly? So I thought it would lend it’s self well to the unique crumb fabric. The last time I tried this method I used the Carpenter’s Wheel die.

First I made chunks for crumb fabric. I chose to just have the upper wings be scrappy crumb goodness. For the lower wings I chose a coordinating fabric. The background is a soft sky blue. I believe it is Kona’s sea glass. You can find it at the Fat Quarter Shop. Finally I used scraps from my black scrap bin to create the bodies.

After placing the various fabrics on the die. I ran it through the Go. Next I sewed up the butterflies. I must say I love how they turned out. But I wanted to give them a sense of fluttering around on my quilt. So I added a wonky border around them. You can learn my no waste method in this video tutorial.

Finally I staggered the columns by adding a strip of background fabric to the top of some. And the bottom of others. I’m pretty pleased with the results. I’ll be adding a simple one sheet pattern to give all the details in my shop. Find it with my other one sheet patterns. I call Hugs. Get your Accuquilt butterfly die. And whip up your own kaleidoscope.

Enjoy this little tutorial to help you create your own butterfly quilt.
