Welcome to Wild Goose Wednesday. Todays block, Dutchmen’s Puzzle is one of my all time favorite blocks.
If you are not using the Nifty Notions Rulers you will need:
4- 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle background fabric
4- 3 1/2″ squares of background fabric
4- 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle geese fabric
4- 3 1/2″ squares contrast fabric
Draw a diagonal line through each of your 3 1/2″ squares
Place it on your 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ geese fabric and sew along the diagonal line.
Trim seam allowance and press open.
Next place your 3 1/2″ square contrast fabric and sew along diagonal line.
Trim seam allowance and press open.
Make four of these geese. Make sure that you place the background fabric on the same side of all your geese.
If you are using your Nifty Notions ruler cut
4- quarter square triangles from a 3 1/2″ strip of geese fabric
4- half square triangles from a 3 1/2″ strip background fabric
4- half square triangles from a 3 1/2″ strip contrast fabric
Place your background fabric on your geese fabric, line up edges, and sew in place. Press open.
Next place your contrast fabric on the opposite edge and sew in place. Press open.
Make four of these making sure that you place the background fabric on the same side each time.
For the block cut 4- 3 1/2″x 6 1/2″ rectangles of background fabric.
Sew these on the point side of each of your geese.
Arrange these units in a pin wheel and sew together.
Yeah your next block is done.
Enjoy! See you next week for another wild goose chase.
I've always loved this block. Beautiful!
what a great block! I am going to have to give this a try thanks for sharing
I love that block! Can't wait to make it.
This is such an intersting block. I always thought of it as a double pinwheel before I knew it could also be Dutchman's Puzzle.
is there a way to make this pattern using just blocks and no rectangles? I have done it before, but for the life of I can't remember the size of the block to cut 🙁
