Rail Fence, basic quilt block, endless possibilities

The rail fence block is a very easy and basic quilt block. It works well as a leader and ender project. Playing with the number of strips and the elements in those strips gives it endless possibilities.

Whether you just use two rails or many the rail fence block is a fun one to play with. There are just so many ways to change things up. Use a jelly roll to make assembly easy. Find great deals on jelly rolls at the Fat Quarter Shop. Or cut your own quick and easy with an Accuquilt Go cutter and strip dies.

Gradation

You can also play with elements in your strips. In my Gradation quilt I used rail fence blocks side by side, changed up the background and added scrappy strips to some of the rails.

Picnic in the Park

With Picnic in the Park I used the traditional setting. But added flying geese to one of my rails. See what I mean about possibilities?

Then their is my Railways quilt, a free pattern through Moda Bake Shop. Here I set the rail fence blocks in a coin quilt setting.
