While creating the blocks in Sew Abundant I drew on classic blocks like the Dresden, Log cabin and pinwheel block. Each of these block is full of tradition. By playing with how I constructed them I was able to give these scrappy quilt blocks a contemporary spin.
For the Dresden I spiked the center in addition to the outside with chunky blades in bold colors. Instead of a complete Dresden I made quarter blocks and used them to bookend the center of the quilt on one side.
In the opposite corner I mirrored this effect with a grandmother’s fan. Complimenting the circular shape and giving it a slightly different feel.
With the log cabin I added the logs in two colors like a traditional log cabin. I just didn’t put them in the traditional setting. Instead I allowed the two colors to spin around each other creating a spiral. By mirroring the blocks I was able to create a vine look, that came out form the pinwheel blocks.
With the pinwheels I put it on point. Putting a block on point is a great way to give it a different feel. I’ve also done this with the stars in my Twinkle quilt.
If you would like to make these scrappy quilt blocks with a contemporary spin. You can find the patterns inside Aunt Em’s Sew Along Adventure. Use the block on their own. Or to make the Sew Abundant Quilt.
