The half square triangle is one of the most versatile tools in a quilter’s kit. By simply sewing two right-angle triangles together, you create a block that integrates seamlessly with classic quilt blocks like the Bear Paw or Maverick Star. Better yet, quilters can create endless patterns just by twisting and turning multiple HSTs. Today I’d like to share a little of what’s possible when exploring this play. When choosing fabric, I like to go scrappy. But to give the eye a place to rest I’ll choose either a single fabric or a bunch of tone on tone fabrics in a single color family.
My two favorite methods for cutting half square triangles are first the AccuQuilt Go. This method is very accurate, produces many with little effort, and leaves no dog ears to trim. Once the HSTs are cut and sewn the real fun begins. Sew them into squares.
