There are quilters who love a fresh contemporary look. And there are quilters who love the tradition of a scrappy quilt. Then there are quilters feel stuck between wanting a quick, clean modern look and needing to use up their cherished fabric scraps. Sail on Baby is a easy baby quilt pattern that appeals to each of these quilters. A sort of choose your own adventure quilt. That is beginner friendly and customizable for seasoned sewists.
I originally made this quilt for my first grandson. My daughter likes a clean modern look. So I set aside my scrap bins and kept my fabric selection minimal. By choosing three neutral solids to make the waves. Adding just a splash of color with the sail on the sailboat. She loved it!
Later I felt impressed to turn this into a pattern. I wanted to be true to my fellow scrap quilters so I included instructions for a scrappy version. By making one set of rails from light blue strip sets, another set of rails from scrappy navy fabrics, and the third set of rails I kept the same to give the eye a place to rest. This was the result.
Because I like to encourage my students to play I wanted to add more options. So I included three different sailboat quilt block options. A basic sailboat.

A sailboat with a striped sail.
And finally a sailboat from half square triangles.
Have fun choosing your adventure.
To ensure your success, note this tip.
I found that if my top and bottom rails were of a similar value that my waves got lost and looked more like boxes. To make sure your waves stay wavy be sure these rows contrast by making one light and one dark.
