I believe that doing small and simple things consistently leads to big things. And today’s post is evidence of that. This simple trick for free quilts has helped me stay productive and motivated. Let me share it with you.
The Trick
The trick is what Bonnie Hunter has coined leaders and enders. This simple practice of keeping pre-cut pieces next to your machine and feeding them through after sewing on your current project has enabled me to make many Free quilts.
I’ve kept pre cut squares by sewing machine to make four patches. Those four patches grew over time and enabled me to make this quilt.
My current leaders and enders project is made from half square triangles that I’ve cut using my friend’s late husband’s shirts. It will become a memory quilt for her. Here is my plan. You can find the pattern inside my Half Square Triangle Bundle Booklet.
Best Blocks and Added Bonuses
In addition to half square triangles and four patches I’ve made nine patches, flying geese and string blocks. It never ceases to amazing me how quickly these free quilts happen. Not only do I end up with free quilts. I save time and thread. The only drawback is I sometimes end up sewing without thread. Because I didn’t notice while I was chain, chain, chaining piece through that my bobbin thread has run out. GRRR!
This is also a great method if you are like me and don’t like making the same block over and over again. By simply sewing a bit of the same block in-between other sewing. Thus breaking up the tedium. So I don’t get board.
But I find the wins outweigh the loses. So I will continue to use this simple trick for free quilts.
