Quilters can feel overwhelmed when combining all the colors and prints they find in their scrap bins. With these simple tips you can take the fear out of fabric selection. Gain confidence to pull fabric for your next scrap quilt. Let’s get started.
First, remember that just like you wouldn’t throw the leftover chocolate cake into the clean out the fridge soup you make. You don’t want to throw all your scraps willy-nilly into a quilt. Take time to consider the feel of the quilt. Are you going bright and happy?
Or would you like to create a warm and cozy feel.
Then choose your scraps accordingly.
Next, while color matters, it’s not as important as value. Value is the lightness or darkness of a fabric. So if your going light with your background. Choose design fabrics that are medium to dark. Whereas if you are going dark with your background, you’ll want to pick design fabrics that are lighter. This way your design won’t get lost. And all the work you put in to sewing your quilt blocks won’t fall flat. Like the stars in this quilt.
Another thing to consider when combining fabric is the size of the print in your fabric. As a rule large pints work well for bigger pieces. While small prints can be used to add interest to a background or for your smaller piecing.
