Why You Should Go on a Quilt Retreat

Quilt retreats are an amazing opportunity for quilters of all skill levels to dive deeper into their craft, recharge creatively, and connect with fellow quilters.  Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn from experts, or a seasoned quilter eager for some uninterrupted creative play, a retreat can be the perfect getaway.

Reasons to Attend a Quilt Retreat

I like to go on a retreat so I can have focused time for quilting.  Life is busy and it’s often hard to find uninterrupted time to work on quilting projects.  At a retreat, you can leave the hustle and bustle behind and immerse yourself in your projects.  Many retreats are held in beautiful, peaceful locations, helping inspire creativity.

Another great reason to go on a retreat is to learn from expert instructors.  These great teachers can introduce you to new techniques, tools, and methods.  Whether you’re looking to improve your piecing, explore new patterns, or refine your quilting skills.  There is always something new to learn.

Quilters are generous, kind and inclusive.  Making a quilt retreat the perfect place to connect and make friends.  Rubbing shoulders in the quilting community will inspire you.  As you see how other quilters use color and fabric to design their quilts.

Finally a quilt retreat is a great place to relax and unwind.  Many quilt retreats offer time for relaxation and delicious meals.  Try excursions on a quilt cruise or a walk in nature at a mountain getaway.

Tips to Make your Quilt Retreat Experience a Success

First bring a variety of projects.  From ones that require concentration to simpler projects.  That way when you can choose a project based on your mood and whether you are quietly sewing or busy chatting and enjoying friends while you sew.

Next make a checklist of everything you need to bring.  I once forgot my machine.  Thankfully a friend had one I could borrow.  And while quilters are more than happy to share, it’s best to be prepared.

Come to a retreat with an open mind.  Even if you are an experienced quilters there are always new things to learn.  I often discover handy trick and useful tips as I’m teaching.  Don’t forget you are on vacation.  Be sure to take a little time for your self just to relax, enjoy the experience and just breathe.  Taking too many classes can be stressful.

Finally be willing to put yourself out there.  Don’t be afraid to strike up conversations, share tips and make connections.  You just might leave with a new friend or two.

Upcoming Live Retreats with Em

If a retreat sounds fun to you.  I’d like to invite you to come along with me.

Join me at beautiful Bryce Canyon this winter for a cozy get away.  I love the hoodoos with snow on them.  It looks like yummy frosting. I enjoy snowshoeing in the park when I’m not sewing.   I’ll be teaching Floating Boxes a classic quilt with traditional four and nine patch blocks.  That has a clean, modern feel.  I will also be teaching Over the Rainbow.  In this class you will learn a quick and easy twist on drunkard’s path.  Don’t worry about the curves, we’ll be using machine applique.  Be sure to save your spot.

If sun and sand is more your style, I’ll be teaching on a quilting cruise with Stitchin’ Heaven.  I’ll be teaching Modern Gems, a scrappy two block quilt set on point.  You will learn strip piecing for fast construction, as well as easy sew and flip.  We will be cruising to the Bahamas, St. Thomas, and St. Martin.  I’m looking forward to quilting at sea and playing in the sun and sand at the various ports.
