I’ve had a basket of T-shirts sitting on the dryer in my sewing room for over a year now. From time to time I would take them down and prep a few. I did this by adding lightweight fusible to the back of each. This keeps them from stretching while you are sewing them together into a memory filled t-shirt quilt.
Next I cut the t-shirts. I don’t like all my blocks to be the same size. So I measure the pictures I’ll be cutting out. Then decide on a multiple to use when cutting out all the t-shirts. For this quilt I used 3, 6, 9, 12. But use whatever works best with the collection of t-shirts you have. You can also use this method.
Then comes the fun part. I start throwing all the blocks up on the design wall. Moving things around to make everything fit and distribute colors evenly. It’s my favorite kind of puzzle.
A t-shirt quilt is a fun gift. This one is for my daughter. I’m thinking I may need to add borders to make it a little wider. Right now it measures 60″ x 78″.

I have also made them for a sick child or for a family whose love one has passed away. Nothing warms the heart after you lose a loved one like wrapping up in a quilt made of their favorite t-shirts.
