With Valentine’s day around the corner I thought it would be fun to share a little patchwork love. Hearts lend themselves well to quilt blocks. Let’s look at a few.
There is a basic heart, made by using two rectangles. By snowballing corners you can simply create a heart.
The wonky heart is a play on this heart. I prefer it, because it allows me to get a more playful look.
The four patch heart allows you to go scrappy and add more colors to your heart. But is the same concept as the basic heart. By using pieced fabric you can add more interest to your four patch heart. Like I did with these string blocks.
Go big with your love by creating a large heart made of many squares. Scrappy Love is an example of this.
As is this scrappy heart by a student in my scrap busting design class. .
Another form of the wonky heart is this colorful heart that uses a log cabin style to form the heart. I used it in my Crazy Love pattern.
Applique is another way you can add a heart to your patchwork. Try needle turn or use a decorative stitch like the blanket stitch to add you heart to the background fabric. I added these hearts to patch a pair of pants using this method.
I like to make little pillow hearts. I’ve used them as handwarmers.
In addition I like to use them to decorate a gift or to share when someone is having a hard time. Use this tutorial to learn how.
