6 Simple and Easy Scrap Busting Blocks

These basic scrap busting blocks are easy to make. I like to use them alone in a quilt or combined to create more complex blocks.  Each scrappy block can be cut using traditional methods.  Or simply with an AccuQuilt Go and a cube set.  I like the 8″ and 12″ cubes best.

Blocks

First up is the versatile half square triangle.  I love playing with hsts as a block and well as a unit in a larger block. They make great pinwheels and star points.   Did you know the 8″ cube enables you to cut 4″ and 2 1/2″ half square triangles.  The 12″ cube is designed for 3″ and 6″ hsts.  So you have many options to play. Don’t have a Accuquilt Go?  Bummer, I love mine!  Try this cheat sheet. Another way to HSTs of different sizes. No math involved. Whether you use blocks that are all the same size, like this collection of 20 half square triangle blocks.  Also if you play with scale HSTs are great to make baskets and other more complicated blocks.

Next up is the classic four patch.  A simple block to make.  In addition being a great alternate block.  to  to the center of a block or create a chain through blocks. This block is a great leader and ender project.  I recently did a post on this traditional block.  Check it out for more ideas.

Another great scrap busting block is the flying geese block.  Try using it to create movement in your quilts.  Lining these blocks in a row will move the eye up and down or across a quilt.  In addition, a spinning effect can be achieved by placing it in a Dutchmen’s puzzle block.

The square in a square block is another block that works well with scraps.  I like a quilt set on point.  So of course I like this cute block.  Try fussy cutting with novelty prints for a fun baby quilt.

Then there is the hour glass block.  This block also works well in the center or corners of a more  complex block.

Finally the rail fence block will help you put a dent in your scraps.  I used this simple block for my grandson’s baby quilt.  While it wasn’t scrappy.  I like how it created the illusion of waves.

Conclusion

Have fun with these 6 scrap busting block.  Try them by themselves.  Or combine them for more scrap quilt options.
