The first step in managing your scrap bins is knowing what you have. Scraps stuffed into boxes and bag, hidden away are hard to find. And if you can’t find your scraps, you can’t use your scraps. Get my FREE scrap sorting method, and make your scraps easy to find and fun to use.
Scrappy Chunk Patterns
If you find your bins are full of scrappy chunks. Meaning anything smaller than a fat quarter but bigger than a charm square. Then you’ll enjoy these patterns. My all time best selling pattern, Sunshine on a Cloudy Day works well with chunks. To maximize it’s scrap busting potential try a scrappy background. Find tips for creating a scrappy background here.
Another great chunky scrap busting pattern is Modern Gems. With two simple blocks set on point a colorful design is created. All in honor of my dad and his silversmithing, and jewelry making.
Shooting Stars is another colorful way to make a dent in your chunky scrap bins. Use larger chunks for the star centers and smaller chunks for the star points and dust.

Scrappy String Patterns
The next type of scraps that accumulate are strips. I love me a good string quilt! My best selling string/strip quilt is Seven Sisters. In this stunning quilt strips are sewn into strip sets and then cut using a 60* wedge ruler. Creating a scrappy background of low volume prints is a great way to up it’s scrap busting power.
Gradation is another popular strip busting pattern. Don’t let all those tiny pieces fool you. Using my quick and easy method, strip sets are sew together and then sub-cut. Making it look like you spent a lot of time piecing without doing all the work.

Finally Scrappy Love is a great way to use up leftover burgundy, red, and pink jellyroll strips.
Crumb Patterns
One of my favorite ways to use my crumbs is to make wonky stars. Those tiny bits of fabric make great star points. Both Wishes and Sparkle include twinkling wonky stars. Be careful they are addictive.
If you enjoy improv piecing you will also enjoy Enchanted Forest. Tiny pieces of fabric make colorful beaks, legs and trunks.
Finally, my Crumb Quilts book is jammed packed with creative ways to use even your smallest scraps. With table runners, wall hangings, as well as throw and bed size quilts you’ll find hours of scrap happy fun.
