It’s a new month and time to do a little exploring. Let’s look into more pieced borders. Last month we looked at how versatile the flying geese unit can be in creating patchwork borders to expand your quilts. Today let’s look at piano keys, drunkard’s path and a chevron style border.
First piano keys, this border is basically coins around the edge of your quilt. Simply sew strips together and cut into the desired width.
Take this border a step further and make it a picket fence. This is done by using the sew and flip method on two of the corners. Doing this gives a point to one end of the piano keys making it a picket instead. I recently took this a step further and gave each end of my keys a point. Next I created a Dresden style corner block to transition my border from the top and bottom to the sides. Learn how to do this inside Aunt Em’s Sew Along Adventure.
Next let’s look at the drunkard’s path pieced border. I like the flow this gives to a quilt. Especially if it is used in a quilt that uses this element.
The last border we’ll explore today can be arranged in two different styles. The first creates a layered chevron.
Or by turning the block you get an interlocking chain.
If you like the look of pieced borders and would like help making and adding them to your quilts. Be sure to join us in Aunt Em’s Sew Along Adventure. I’m currently offering a unit on expanding borders.
