Outside the Quilt Block Creative Play

I love a little creative play when it comes to quilting.  What is play?  When we watch children play they take on roles, experiment without worrying about the outcome.  How do we mimic this in quilting.  For me, I take a block or idea. (the role)  Then experiment with possibilities.  I play with color placement.  Look at what happens as I arrange things differently.  Having no plan.  Just seeing what happens.  This month I played with slash and insert outside the quilt block.  Here’s what I came up with.

First, I played with a block on point.  Before adding the triangles to put it on point I slashed and inserted strips into the background.  I did a small one with only one slash and insert.  Making the cuts at a slight angle so that they created a spinning affect.

Next I went big and made a couple of cuts at different angles.  Then added the scrappy strips.

After that I added borders to a crumb block.  To see what would happen if I made the cuts through the block and border.

Finally I cut through just the border and inserted thinly cut strip sets.

This outside the quilt block play has given me more ideas to play with.  Plus I see some of what I’ve created coming together in a quilt.

I’ve also done this with the Majestic Mountain block. I created these patterns from that play.

My favorite birthday was when I played with these blocks.  And created this quilt.
