I love a pieced quilt back. It’s a great way to use up scraps from the front. They are the perfect home for extra or orphan blocks. I’ve heard of these patchwork backs called a party on the back. If this idea appeals to you. Then you’re in the right place.
First up I have the back of my Crystalized quilt. While designing this quilt I tried several methods to make the diamond. I wanted them to be as easy as possible to make. This resulted in extra blocks. Rather than add them to an orphan block bin. I pieced them into a back for the quilt.
With Sunshine on a Cloudy Day, I sewed up the leftover fabric strips. Then I offset this section with background fabric. It is more appealing to the eye to have things a little off center. Rather than plopping things dead center.
This method can also be used if you back is not quite big enough. Simply make a section and insert it into your back. This video tutorial will show you how.
If you want to get rid of a lot of scraps. Piecing them into a back is the perfect solution. This is a great way to use larger chunks or fabric that you may wonder why you bought it. If you are wondering how I do this. Check out this video tutorial.
