I’ve always enjoyed flying kites. Even when my kids were little and most of my time was spent untangling string. The challenge of getting it up. Plus the joy of watching a kite soar and dance. Even if your not the one flying it is relaxing. March will be here soon. For me that means kite flying season. So I thought I’d bring the joy of kite flying inside with a scrappy kite table runner.
I started by pulling happy fabrics from my scraps. I paired them into six sets of two. You could go scrappier by using four different fabrics for each kite. Next I used the kite pattern found inside my Sew Along Adventure. This block can be found in Smooth Sailing and Color my World.
There are instructions for paper piecing as well as traditional patchwork. If you are new to paper piecing or have not tried it using freezer paper. Here is a quick tutorial. I like the freezer paper method for two reasons. I can use the template more than once. And I don’t have to rip the paper off afterward. Win, win! Here is a quick tutorial showing this method. Along with how I assembled the kite table runner.
To add to the fun and whimsy of the kite runner I embellished the kites with decorative tails. I used Chenille it and scraps of fabric. In addition I added a little embroidery.
This was a fun fast make. Head on over to the Sew Along to get your pattern. Then look forward to more quick projects each month. In addition to the weekly blocks and quarterly play.
