Summer is here! Yay! It time to relax and enjoy time gathering with friends and family. Add a sunny spot to your table with this summer table topper. Whether you use it at home, beach house or as a gift it is sure to compliment your gathering.
Choosing blocks
To start you will want four summer themed quilt blocks. I was going for a beachy theme. So I chose a lighthouse and a few sailboat blocks from my Smooth Sailing Quilt. You could also go with a woodsy feel with trees and a cabin. Or maybe the Fourth of July is more your style, with red white and blue themed blocks or a dark background with fireworks.
Next arrange your blocks in a pleasing manor. Depending on the size of your blocks and the size of your table you could add sashing and borders. Once you have settled on your layout, simply sew it together.
Finishing your Summer table topper
After you have got your top finished cut a back that is 3-4″ bigger than the top and use a batting scrap or for a lighter/flatter version use some flannel. Layer your pieces into a quilt sandwich. You can learn how to do that here. Once you have your quilt sandwich enjoy quilting it with the design of your choice. Some simple design choices are; straight line, wavy lines, or a stipple. A table topper is a great way to practice your free motion quilting skills.
Once you have quilted your table topper simple bind it. While I find hand binding relaxing, I’m more inclined to do it by machine. Just because it’s fast and I have lots of quilts I want to make. You can learn how to machine bind your quilts with this video tutorial.
