I love the freedom that comes from free form improv piecing.  It really gets my creative juices flowing.  Giving me the ability to discover new possibilities with my scrap fabric.  If this kind of patchwork play appeals to you, you’re in luck.  Today I’m offering 8 improv piecing tutorials.

Log Cabin Style

First up, a twist on the traditional log cabin quilt block.  The wonky log cabin enables you to use fabric strips of differing widths.  In fact with this method you can add to your center piece in a random order.  I have done this kind of quilt totally scrappy as well as in a more controlled scrappy look with just a few colors.  Learn how to make your own with this tutorial

The wonky rose is another form of a improv log cabin.  It uses a multi sided piece as it’s center.  And is another great way to play with scrappy strips.  I like how playing with the value of one color gives these free pieced blocks an dimensional look.  My Wonky Rose Garden, found in my Crumb Quilts book is an example of these colorful blocks.

Wonky Favorites

Another nature themed improv block is the wonky tree.  I like to make these in sets of two to reduce fabric waste.  I combined these easy trees with my Yarn Bomb Trees and wonky birds to create Enchanted Forest

One of my all time favorite improv blocks is the wonky star.  I like to use my fabric crumbs for their sparkling points.  In addition I enjoy making them in various sizes, like I did in my Wishes quilt.  Here’s the tutorial.

Another favorite is the wonky heart.  I combined this simple block with more complex improv hearts in my Crazy Love quilt.

Basket blocks are classic.  Adding a little wonk to this block is playful and fun.  I like to use rick rack for a cheerful handle.  Learn how to make this block.

The snowball block is also steeped in tradition.  By free piecing the snowball corners you can add a little whimsy to this block.  Discover how.  I set these blocks into simple nine patches in Gathering

Framing

The final improv block tutorial I have for you is my No Waste Wonky Frame.  This method enables you to combine those swap blocks that are slightly different sizes in a cheery way.  Making them dance.
