How to Make a Traditional Log Cabin Block

The log cabin quilt block holds a special place in my heart. It is one of my favorite quilt blocks. Is it because my first quilt was a log cabin quilt. This one was very basic, a large center square with just one round. I have since made many log cabin quilts. The log cabin block is just so versatile. This little mini log cabin quilt I made uses three variations of the log cabin quilt block.

These blocks are all very traditional. But you know I like to mix things up. So many of my log cabin quilts have been improvisational. I have a quick little tutorial that teaches this fun method. I went a step further with Wonky Rose Garden and made the centers wonky. It’s always fun to experiment and try new things with a traditional quilt block.

In addition to making this block wonky. I’ve create just a quarter log cabin. In fact this is one of the all time favorite tutorials on my blog. It get’s more visits than any other tutorial.

While working on some course content I discovered that I had never made a tutorial for a traditional log cabin block. Well, we needed to fix that. So I pulled out my 2 1/2″ strips and created this tutorial for you. I hope you enjoy it. Make sure to share what you create on my Facebook page. Remember to answer the questions when asking to join.
