Don’t you just love the pinwheel quilt block? It is cute! It’s happy! Plus it’s a fun way to add movement to your quilt! Today I’m giving it a modern spin. Simply by framing it with the background fabric to give it a floating effect. I’ve done this with a nine patch. In fact it is one of my most popular tutorials. Floating Boxes uses a variation of this block.
The great thing about this block is that it can be cut out quickly with an 3″ half square triangle die. I like this die because I can cut out three pinwheels at once. See! Quick and Easy! I cut the frame using my 2″ strip die.
This will create a 9″ finished block. Use it for a fun modern quilt. Watch for another option to showcase your favorite big print fabrics along with these modern spin quilt blocks. I’ve created a free pattern for Accuquilt. It will release next month. I’ll be sure to let you know here as well as in Em’s Scrappy Bits and Tips. Make sure you sign up so you don’t miss out. For now here is the tutorial.
