Embrace the cozy vibes of autumn with five fall quilt block tutorials. Use them to make seasonal pillows, wall hangings, bags and more. These blocks are scrap friendly, easy to make and suitable for quilters of all skill levels. Enjoy two different pumpkin blocks, a couple of leaf ideas as well as a basket to gather all of fall’s bounty.
Pumpkin Blocks
The first block is a simple pumpkin. This block is a variation on the classic snowball block. By simply adding a stem and your favorite fall fabrics this cute block comes together quickly. Have fun whipping up a few.
Next we have the nine patch pumpkin. Similar to the simple pumpkin just scrappier. Enjoy pulling different fall colored 2 1/2″ squares to make your pumpkin. Or cut new squares from jellyroll strips. You could even dive into your stash and use the AccuQuilt to cut useable squares. Combine them with the simple pumpkin to make a fall table runner for yourself or as a homemade gift for a friend.
Leaf Blocks
Add a few leaves to your runner with the scrappy maple leaf. Capture all the color of autumn while busting your scraps. Use your favorite method to make half square triangles. The fastest way I have found is with my AccuQuilt. But if you don’t have one I also enjoy this method. It enables me to cut squares as well as half square triangles from a single strip, while eliminating fabric waste.
I really enjoy the many colors and patterns this next method creates while using my smallest fabric scraps. By using reverse applique you can create leaves of all shapes and colors. Simply make a color wash of fall colored crumb fabric. Then cut out your desired leaf shape on a low volume or solid background and lay over the top. This is the method I used for Blowin in the Wind, found in my Crumb Quilts book.
Basket
To gather the abundance of fall try this basic basket. Feel free to play with the basket handle. I’ve used rick rack as well as bias tape. When using bias tape, I like to make my own. This enables me to choose the perfect fabric for my handle. Learn how to make your own bias tape.
