Stay Warm this Winter with These Quilt Blocks

I know I’m weird but winter is my favorite season.  Drinking hot cocoa with cinnamon.  Bundling up to play in the snow.  Snuggling under a quilt to read a good book.  Letting the bright scraps fly while I create.  Speaking of creating I came up with these stay warm this winter blocks.  Let me show you how I made them.

You will need the sweater, mitten and hat templates from Missouri star.  I’m having a giveaway on Instagram.  So check it out.  You will also need scrappy strips.  I cut mine on the AccuQuilt Go with the 1 1/2″ strip die and threw in a few random strips.  (Nothing wider than 2″)

Next I pulled out my low volume scrap bin and cut 5″ squares.  Then I traced the template onto the square and carefully cut it out.  Using reverse applique I have found is the best way to do applique with strip sets and crumb fabric.  You get a colorful motif without having to deal with lots of seams.

Here is a video of my process.

These cozy blocks are sure to help you stay warm this winter.  As long as you stay in your snug sewing room.  But they are cute and would make fun mug rugs, a wall hanging or go with a darker base and use them for hand warmers.  If you’re looking for more creative ways to use your strips.  Try my Strip Set Play workshop.  It’s’ bursting with unique scrappy solutions for your fabric strips.
