Creating a scrap quilt is a fun way to be environmentally friendly, develop your skills and bring love and comfort to others. It’s a win, win, win! So how do you go about creating a scrap quilt? I have a little experience in this area. So let me share.
Gathering Fabric
First you will want to gather your scraps. If your new to scrap quilting, know that quilters are generous, many will share their scraps with you. Also know that you can purchase them. If you are looking for good quality scraps I have bags of crumbs and chunks available. These are good for starting your stash as well as adding new life to an old stash.
Once your scraps are gathered you will want to sort them. My method can be found here. You don’t have to sort all your scraps in order to get started. In fact that may be overwhelming. So feel free to do it over time. I will often sort scraps while I watch a show with my hubby. For your quilt you will just need to sort enough for your quilt. And really that is not a lot, a five quart bucket or shoe box will be more than enough.
Choosing A Design
Have a plan, and I’m using that word loosely here. Maybe your plan is just to thin the herd. Or it could be more controlled like a holiday theme, eye spy, or certain colorway. Even if you “plan” is just thin the herd, keep in mind that value is what matters most in a scrap quilt. It’s role is far more important that color.
That brings us to your choice of design. There are lots of free scrap patterns out there. Check out these, or do a search. Whatever pattern you choose remember that value matters. While you don’t have to use one fabric or color for your background. Do make sure that it contrasts with the fabrics you choose for the design part of your block. No sense going to all the work of making the blocks only to have everything blend together and have nothing pop and catch the eye.
Piecing
Now that you have your fabric and design picked out it’s time to start piecing. While I’m no fan of quilt police. I know we all want to do our best. So while I would encourage you to give yourself grace when things are less than perfect. Here are a few tips to help you have more success.
Finishing Your Quilt
So many quilters have piles of tops. Why do we get stuck at this stage of the game? Maybe we loose steam. Perhaps it’s more fun to start a new project than to finish an old one. Whatever your reason, I can say a finished quilt awesome! So how do we get to there. I’ve got a few tips for you. But if you don’t want to baste and quilt your own quilts. You can always do it by check. There are many talented quilters out there that will do it for you. In fact, I have a few of my quilts with a quilter right now. So no judgement here.
I hope this helps you create some amazing scrap quilts. Be sure to share them. Email me or let everyone see in the Facebook group.
