Ideas for Homemade Gifts

Do you like to create homemade gifts?  I like the personal and heartfelt touch they add to my giving.  With Christmas 6 months away it’s time to start thinking about my handmade gifts.  Traditionally in my family I give a fun gift, a useful gift and a gift from the heart.  The first two are often store bought.  The third is mostly handmade.  If you are looking for ideas on heartfelt gifts try these.

First a journal covered to reflect the recipient’s personality or style. In addition to the personalized cover I have added quotes and prompts around a theme.  For parents you could have prompts of childhood memories.  For my kids I make it more like a gratitude journal. Use this tutorial to cover a journal.

Kitchen

Next you can create items for the kitchen.  A table runner is easy to make.  Simply combine three blocks divided by sashing, like I did with my Braveheart table runner.  Hot pads can be made from orphan blocks.  Or try this quilt as you go hot pad.  Another kitchen gift idea is an appliqued hand towel.  The AccuQuilt has many dies for every season and occasion to make your applique easy.

Hobbies

Try making homemade gifts that go with a hobby.  For instance your quilting friends may like a pincushion.  Whereas the reader in your life could use a bookmark.  Furthermore the artist may like a roll to hold their brushes or pencils.  I’ve also seen this done for a chef with knives.

Another idea is to fill a handmade bag with treasures specifically chosen for your special person.  You may want to try a zipper pouch with make up.  A tote with yarn, beach supplies, etc. The possibilities are endless.

I hope this helps you get a jump start on your homemade gift giving.
