January in Utah is a bit gray. And while gray is one of my favorite backgrounds. It is not my favorite color. My husband has been know to say. ‘I don’t know what your favorite color is. But I know you like bright colors.’ He is correct. I’m not even sure I know what my favorite color is. But whatever it is. It’s going to be bright. It makes me happy. That’s why I love color.

Especially during the gray winter bright colors add a zing to my life. I love to splash some bright colors on grays from light to dark. Gradation uses all kinds of shades of gray and lots of bright, happy, colorful scraps. One of my all time favorite quilts, Double Wedding Ring has a dark gray background. While Mary’s Garden uses light grays in the background. In fact my bedroom is decorated with various gray backgrounds and splashes of bright color.

I also like to combine bright colors with navy. In fact it’s been a love affair of mine recently. I used it with Shooting Stars and Enchanted Forest. As well as Sunshine on a Cloudy Day.

But bright colors combine well with any background. I’ve used various greens to create Bear Scraps and Treasures. Brown made a lovely background for this Dresden topper. Once in a while I’ll even use white. Though as a mom of boys that rarely happens.

If you’re looking for a way to add a little joy to your January. I’d suggest adding lots of bright color. Want to learn my foolproof simple trick for combining color?  Join me in my FREE 3 Strategies 4 Amazing Quilts workshop.  Looking forward to seeing what you create!
