Friendship Star Quilt Block Tutorial

It’s no secret, I love stars in my quilts. The friendship star quilt block is a simple but cute little block. Made up simply of squares and half square triangles. I like to cut mine out with the Accuquilt Go. If you have a cube set you can cut out a bunch with the #2 and #5 dies.

It’s a fun way to practice and use half square triangles. If you don’t have a go. Try my favorite, no waste method for half square triangles or use your favorite method. Either way make up a bunch. Four are required for each block. Then have fun making friendship stars.

I’ve made them traditionally and wonky. So if your half square triangles are not perfect, just embrace the wonk. The friendship star quilt block will still be adorable. Fussy cutting the center is also a fun way to play with this traditional block.

Playing with the setting you use with your friendship stars will also change the look of your quilt. I put them on point in my Union quilt. Then framed them. It made for a great man quilt. Something my boys appreciate.

However you make and use your friendship star quilt blocks make sure to have fun. Also make sure to share them with me. I love to see how you make them your own. Email me. The blue/gray friendship stars quilt is lovely. I have a bunch of half square triangles leftover from another (downsized) project… in teals. This will be lovely. Thank you.
