How to Make a Pinwheel Quilt Block

The pinwheel quilt block is cute, fun, and easy. Just a variation on the basic four patch block. It uses the versatile half square triangle in place of plain blocks.

There are several methods to use when creating half square triangles. You can put two squares together with a diagonal line drawn on one. Sew on either side of that line and then cut on the line. Use my cheat sheet to create half square triangles of all sizes.

Another method uses a flying geese or essential triangle ruler. I find it more accurate than the previously mentioned method. I find as that if I put the two strips together. Then cut them so they are ready to go to the sewing machine. That they come out perfectly every time. Checkout my tutorial.

My favorite method when making half square triangles that finish at 2″ uses the

Spin cycle

Whatever method you choose to use you will need four of them for your pinwheel block. Watch my quick tutorial to learn how. It includes tips on pressing so they lay flat.
